Mortgage Interest Supplement and the Household Charge

The Household Charge legislation states that an owner of residential property who is getting  mortgage interest supplement in respect of that  property on the liability date (1st January 2012) is entitled to a waiver from payment of the Household Charge  for that year.

But – owners need to be aware that they still have to register for the Household charge (online or by post) and claim the waiver.
All  Household Charge  waiver claims will be validated against  data held by the Department of Social Protection.  There are only about 18,000 claimants in the whole country.

When the Dept of Environment sorts out the list of Unfinished Estates – they will be entitled to a waiver too.  Likewise – all owners are supposed to register for the household charge and claim the waiver.
