The reductions to USC that were announced in Budget 2016 were heralded as a massive change prior to the Budget . We saw headlines in one paper saying that it would mean an extra €1000 in workers take home pay – but that was rubbish.
The changes to the USC in 2016 will result in more take-home pay for plenty of people – but nowhere near a €1000 year for most people. Someone on €70,000 a year will see a drop in USC of €902 a year – but the drop is much smaller for lower earners.

Here is a simple table showing how the USC changes will affect a single earner.
Gross
Wage USC 2015 USC 2016 Diff/Yr Diff/Wkly
15000 285 210 75 1.45
20000 545 393 152 2.92
25000 895 668 227 4.36
30000 1245 943 302 5.81
35000 1595 1218 377 7.25
50000 2645 2043 602 11.58
70000 4045 3143 902 17.35
So someone on the median wage of around €30,000 a year will see a decrease of 5.81 a week in USC which is €302 a year or €25 a month
